Newsnight host Jeremy Paxman is due to interview the notorious pirate who will talk openly about his life, crew, and issues over two dimensionality. (BBC2, 8:00)
"In the Young Guardian of September 13 [1991] we stated that the Captain Pugwash cartoon series featured characters called Seaman Staines and Master Bates, and for that reason the series had never been repeated by the BBC. We accept that it is untrue that there ever were any such characters. Furthermore, the series continues to be shown on television and on video. We apologize to Mr. Ryan, the creator, writer and artist of the Captain Pugwash films and books. We have agreed to pay him damages and his legal costs."
I recall the inaccurate names being bandied around in the playground in the 70s. It was a cheap shot against a very good piece of children’s TV - which is why I stuck to the real names in my ‘article’ !!!!
As crew names went, Master Mate came awfully close to Seaman Staines.
..and the cabin boy's name was emphatically NOT Roger
And was the Master's name not Bates? An alias no doubt.

'Fraid I was still believing in them until you straightened me out just now...
